British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
This news arrives less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
